Failure of the Mediterranean Record, new stand-by for Yvan Bourgnon

Yvan Bourgnon and his son Mathis did not beat the reference time of the Mediterranean crossing. With less than 60 seconds difference with the previous record 1 day 18 h 58 min and 19 seconds established in August 2017 the WSSRC could not homologate the time achieved by the two men of 01 Day 18 Hours 58 Minutes 17 Seconds. New stand-by from 1 August 2018.

Yvan Bourgnon and his son Mathis had set out to conquer the Mediterranean Record on July 9. On their Nacra F20, they left Marseille at 2:33 p.m. to reach the Sidi Bou Saïd lighthouse in Carthage, Tunisia at 9:31 a.m. on July 11.

When they arrived, it was impossible to know if the record was broken, the difference between the reference time - 1 day 18 h 58 min and 19 seconds established in August 2017 - and the time established by the two men being calculated in seconds.

The WSSRC has made its comeback and the two mariners have not been able to set a new record. With a Marseille - Carthage time of 01 Day 18 Hours 58 Minutes 17 Seconds, they only improve the reference time by 2 seconds. However, to set the record, a difference of at least 60 seconds is required.

Nevertheless, Yvan and Mathis draw a positive conclusion from this experience. Their sports catamaran, which had been improved for this challenge, has kept these promises and is performing well for this kind of record. Finally, the crew - father and son - combined their experience and optimised this crossing.

But they did not stop there and decided to start again to win the record. They will be on stand-by from August 1st, on weather watch from Marseille.
