To celebrate its 50th anniversary, the SNSM is publishing a beautiful book telling the story of sea rescue in France for more than 150 years. Although the SNSM is 50 years old, its origins date back to the merger of several organizations (including the Société Centrale de Sauvetage des Naufragés, the Société des Hospitaliers Sauveteurs Bretons and the Société Humaine et des Naufrages de Boulogne).

Widely illustrated, this book traces the history of the MNSM by describing the conditions of rescues of canoes driven by oars. Then the modern rescue means are also presented with even an explanation on the use of drone. Finally, the last part of the book is a portrait gallery depicting the men and women who perform rescues at sea. A nice way to pay tribute to the dedication of these volunteers.

This book is written by Gérard Piouffre, historian and lecturer, specialist of the Navy. He is helped in this realization by Bernard Rubinstein, former journalist of the nautical press and chineur of all the objects of the navy. Many of the illustrations in this book are taken from his collection.
Very accessible, this book is both encyclopaedic on the history of the SNSM, but is also interesting to read, punctuated by stories about the dramatic shipwrecks that forged the construction and the history of sea rescue. The numerous illustrations with their captions are also there to attract the reader.
