The Under The Pole III expedition led by Ghislain Bardout and Emmanuelle Périé-Bardout focuses in 2017/2020 on the exploration of the Twilight Zone, located 100 m below the surface of the oceans. These extreme divers, in correlation with scientists will study the fauna and flora of this hitherto unexplored place, on three different zones :

  • Northwest Passage
  • French Polynesia
  • Antarctic

Let's discover today the second episode of the web-series, about the team training before the start. To prepare an expedition, there is a very big work upstream, which can take up to several years. For the big departure, which takes place on May 20, 2017, the team of the Why - the project schooner - has prepared and trained for a long time.

It all started in Concarneau, where we had to find partners, equipment and prepare the boat to sail in the polar regions. Then we had to prepare a team and train them to be as competent as possible. To do this, the core team left for a week in the Alps, in Bonneval-sur-Arc for a cross-country skiing session. The opportunity to do sport, but also to discover oneself and create team cohesion, very important to complete the project.

The video ends with an underground dive training for Ghislain and Martin. It's important to keep training and not rest on your laurels. Techniques and equipment are evolving and we must keep abreast of new developments and benefit from the experience of professionals.

In total, 12 people worked at the start of the Why for this 3 year trip around the world.
