Glénat Publishing, in partnership with the Musée de la Marine, is launching a new collection of comic strips: The great naval battles. Directed by Jean-Yves Delitte, Official Painter of the Navy and already author of several comic strips, this collection will bring together several drawing authors. To ensure the coherence of the whole, all covers will be by Jean-Yves Delitte. At the end of each book, an 8-page learning booklet puts the battle into context with maps and period documents.
The collection includes 8 books retracing 8 famous battles at different times. The first 3 volumes have just been published, the following ones will appear regularly until 2018.
With the first 3 volumes, we were able to dive into the battles of Chesapeake (1781), Trafalgar (1806) and Jutland (1915).
to come :
- Tsushima
- Lepanto
- Hampton Roads
- Stamford Bridge
- Salamine
The first three stories are placed at the level of the different commands, but also within the crews. We live through the hell these sailors went through during these battles to which they did not always understand the ins and outs.
The details of the drawings and the richness of the anecdotes show the historical work done to trace these historical episodes. Adventure comics lovers won't find what they're looking for, because the story wants to tell too much historical precision and doesn't leave too much to improvisation. But providing access through drawing to these battles and raising pages of history by making them more accessible than our textbooks provide a good opportunity to remember these episodes. Attention, these are historical comics, not albums for children...
A special mention to Jean-Yves Delitte and Denis Béchu, the two draftsmen of the first three volumes for the quality of their work and the almost cinematographic rendering to which they arrived.
