It's by meeting a client at Grand Pavois de La Rochelle that Christian Picard, the new head of the yard, had the idea of developing an aluminium catamaran. Indeed, this client in love with his UFO monohull wanted to switch to a catamaran. Appreciating the benefits of aluminium, he couldn't find anything affordable on the market in this material and was about to turn to a large production model in polyester..
From there was born the idea to propose a traveling catamaran, just like what UFOs are. The design of this OvniCat was entrusted to Alain Mortain (from the firm Mortain & Mavrikios in La Rochelle) known for having designed the first Nautitechs in particular.
Like a UFO this yacht will be simple, but with a modern look thanks to the inverted bows. She will have no daggerboards, but fixed wings. The deckhouse with its vertical glass surfaces is protected by a cap. The helm station is unique just behind the deckhouse bulkhead.
Intended for a reduced crew (and not for charter), the accommodation is traditional with a starboard owner's hull (aft cabin and toilet in the bow) and 2 double cabins in the other hull (one toilet). The galley is under the deckhouse.
Now we just have to find the first customer to start production. The advantage of aluminium construction is that you don't have to create a mould to produce the boat.
