When boating, it is more common to spend more time on the water than under it. And yet, it can be interesting to know what is going on under our hulls. For curiosity, but also for safety.
The simplest and cheapest solution is to equip yourself with a mask and fins. But you will quickly run out of air. So why not think about a hookah?
This small portable electric compressor stays on the boat and sends air through a long hose to the diver through a regulator. Much like the scuba suits of yesteryear, you can stay underwater indefinitely.
The most efficient hookah is the Nardi model powered by 12 volts (marketed by Croix du Sud Marine). This model is interesting because it has a sufficient flow to dive in depth (180 l/minute). It is equipped with a tank of 3 liters of air which also serves as protection to the engine in the form of a pipe which surrounds the hookah. It is also by this place that we carry the compressor. The connection on the battery is done by 2 crocodile clips.
We had the opportunity to test the device. It is possible to go to the end of the 17-meter hose to unhook an anchor, for example. It is also efficient to remove a rope caught in a propeller, to change an anode or to scrub the hull.
Be careful, if this device does not require any license or diploma to have it on board, to use it requires a little knowledge in diving not to risk an accident. But once assimilated these bases, the use of a hookah is very basic.
It is also recommended to check the power consumption. A hookah consumes 52 A in 12 V. It is advisable to leave the motor running while you use it so as not to drain the onboard battery quickly. But once this precaution taken, you are in autonomy to intervene under your hull.
