From October 19 to 25, 2026, Granville will host the French Kiteboarding and Wingfoil Championships. The first events are scheduled for October 20. To determine the winners, the organizers will be able to utilize four water sports centers. This format prioritizes optimal sailing conditions.

That?s what makes this edition unique: the races won?t necessarily take place at the same location every day. The organizing club, 8 Milles Nautic, will be able to choose from four sailing bases depending on weather conditions and tides.

This flexibility addresses the specific requirements of the disciplines represented. Kitefoil and wingfoil slalom racing require conditions that allow for the setup of speed courses, while freestyle requires sufficient space to perform tricks.

The event also requires significant logistical support. Competitors, their support staff, and their equipment will be transported from Granville to the selected venues. Any changes to the race course must be announced well in advance to allow competitors time to prepare.

Kitefoil, slalom, and freestyle: different requirements

The first races are scheduled to begin on Tuesday, October 20. The championship features youth and Open divisions, with 18 titles announced by the French Sailing Federation.

In kitefoiling, competitors seek speed on boards equipped with a foil, which lifts the hull above the water. Controlling the kite, performing maneuvers, and reading wind shifts are crucial.

In wingfoil slalom racing, starts and mark rounds can make all the difference. Staying airborne during a gybe helps minimize speed loss.

Freestyle kiteboarding and freestyle wingfoiling follow a different set of rules: competitors are judged on their tricks. Consistent wind and water conditions directly influence their performance.

In Granville, the organizers will therefore have to balance sometimes conflicting needs. A venue well-suited for speed races will not necessarily be the best fit for freestyle events.

National champions and several top players expected to attend

The FFVoile press release announces, among other things, the expected participation of Vaïna Picot, Axel Gérard, Thomas Proust, Tom Pansard, and Antoine Ollivier. These athletes are among those highlighted ahead of the event, pending confirmation of their entries.

Beyond individual performance, one of the key challenges will be the riders? ability to adapt quickly to the conditions they encounter. Changes in wind, rougher water, or strong currents can affect their choices regarding course and equipment, within the limits of each series? rules.

The traveling format offers organizers more options for hosting events. However, it does not guarantee that all races will be held: decisions will depend on actual conditions and safety requirements.

With one week to go before the launch, the main challenge is therefore twofold: to determine which are the best French specialists and to find, each day, the body of water best suited to their discipline.
