NETTINOX by Matt Chem: a passivating gel to treat rust on stainless steel boats

Stainless steel is used on most pleasure boats. However, it can show signs of corrosion in a marine environment. A passivating gel treats these rust pits while limiting the need for mechanical intervention.

Although stainless steel is widely used on board for its resistance to corrosion, it is not totally immune to the aggressions of the marine environment. Salt deposits, lack of rinsing or prolonged wintering can lead to stains and rust pitting on turnbuckles, stanchions, balconies or cleats.

Non-abrasive chemical treatment for marine stainless steel

Stainless steel maintenance often relies on abrasive products or polishing operations that can end up marking surfaces. NETTINOX gel, distributed by Matt Chem, works differently. Applied with a brush, it dissolves traces of corrosion without any mechanical action. After 7 to 12 minutes, the product is rinsed off with fresh water.

This method can be useful on polished parts or stainless steel tubes, where scratches caused by abrasive pads remain visible.

Passivation to limit the return of corrosion

In addition to cleaning, the product claims a passivation action. This process restores the protective chromium oxide layer naturally present on the surface of stainless steel. This layer plays an essential role in the material's resistance to corrosion.

The semi-gel format also facilitates application to complex parts such as stanchion bases, fittings, chainplates or certain vertical areas. The product adheres to surfaces without excessive flow, enabling localized treatment without dismantling.

According to the manufacturer, a 250 ml jar treats around 2 m² of stainless steel surface. NETTINOX is marketed at a guide price of 20.50 inc. tax for this packaging (price recorded in 2026).
