Life jackets for dogs and cats: what to choose for safe sailing

More and more yachtsmen are taking their pets on board. For their safety, lifejackets for dogs and cats are becoming a non-essential piece of equipment, but one that makes an undeniable contribution to comfort on board. Here are the most common models, their designs and prices.

They board the dinghies, play on the beaches, paddle across or watch for fishing lines. Dogs and cats are now fully-fledged crew members on many boats. But like their masters, they can fall overboard, tire or be swept away by the current. Hence the importance of lifejackets designed specifically for them. Several manufacturers offer adapted models, with ranges that vary according to the animal's size, materials, buoyancy and additional features.

Buoyancy adapted to animal morphology

Vests for dogs are built on the same principle as those for humans: closed-cell foam for buoyancy, body support and ergonomic cut. The difference lies in the harness architecture, adapted to quadruped morphology. Ventral straps prevent thoracic compression, while neck support is reinforced.

At Plastimo, sizes range from S (23 cm back, 45 cm chest) to XL (41 cm back, 74 cm chest), starting at 24.90?. Model S is also suitable for cats. Each size features two quick-release buckle straps, a neck strap with hook-and-loop fastener, and a back handle for extracting the animal from the water. Retro-reflective strips ensure visibility in low-light conditions.

Equipment designed for safety and recovery

In addition to buoyancy, manufacturers include essential accessories. All models feature a ring for attaching a leash or short lifeline, to keep your pet close by. Back handles are designed to lift the animal with one hand, even when wet.

At Jobe, the structure is based on sturdy nylon fabric combined with EPE foam, with a reflective handle for easier location. The price is around 39?.

Lalizas' models are designed for simplicity and lightness. Made from polyethylene and soft nylon, they come in four sizes according to the animal's weight, with a price tag of ?19.99. Each vest has a single handle, but the straps are clearly visible and the seams reinforced.

For intensive use: Spinlock and Secumar move upmarket

In the upper segment, brands specializing in on-board safety, such as Spinlock and Secumar, offer highly technical models. Spinlock's Fido vest, available from 69 euros, features a wrap-around cut and breathable materials. Thermal comfort is enhanced, making it suitable for summer sailing and very active dogs.

Secumar's Secudogs model is clearly positioned as a floating safety harness. It combines nylon and neoprene, includes four adjustment points, a wide handle and a heavy-duty ring for lifelines. Visibility is ensured by a bright color and reflective stripes. Priced at 89.95 euros inc. tax, it is clearly targeted at boaters wishing to board their companion regularly or in more serious sea conditions.

A useful choice for less sheltered sailing areas

On a calm lake, a sporting animal can manage without a vest. But on a sailboat at sea, aboard a RIB or on a paddle in coastal sailing, the risks are very real: accidental falls, panic, hypothermia, physical wear and tear. A lifejacket facilitates recovery, reduces fatigue and makes the animal more visible in the water. On some boats, they are even compulsory as soon as the animal is attached to a lifeline.

For sailors who take their furry companions on board, a good, snug-fitting, easy-to-handle vest can make all the difference between a controlled swim and an incident that needs to be dealt with urgently.
