Editorial / Crossing the Atlantic... each in his own way

As autumn draws to a close, the Atlantic looks like an XXL playground for all ocean lovers. But if the direction is the same: 270° west! the ways of experiencing this crossing have never been so diverse.

On one side, the giants of the Transat Café L'Or are speeding towards Martinique. On these Ultim, Imoca, Ocean Fifty or state-of-the-art Class40 boats, the ocean is crossed at over 30 knots, with cameras on board, drones in the air, daily messages to shore and well-oiled communications. It's the Atlantic in grand style, with images in every direction and breathtaking performances.

In contrast, the mini-transat sailors go it alone, on their small 6.50-meter boats, with no weather assistance, no contact with land, no network and no real-time video sharing. No streaming, no flashbulbs: just the ocean, their compass and their courage. A raw, almost anachronistic adventure, but one of rare intensity.

And then there are those on the Rallye des Îles du Soleil, sailing between Cape Verde and Marie-Galante in contemplative mode. Here, we take our time: fishing, naps, reading, gentle watches and sunset aperitifs. The aim is not to get there quickly, but to enjoy it for a long time.

Three ways of crossing, three rhythms, three philosophies. But the same ocean, demanding and generous. And the same palpable desire: to experience the Atlantic in one's own way, according to one's means, dreams and tempo.
