With its new GPSMAP 9000xsv range, Garmin continues to roll out its top-of-the-range chartplotters, already present on large cruising boats. The arrival of 10-, 13- and 17-inch formats means that they can now also be used on smaller boats.
4K screen and Mini LED backlighting: improved legibility or window dressing?
The first thing we notice is the announcement of 4K resolution on the 13" and 17" versions. Charts and data are displayed with greater precision, and reading in bright sunlight is made easier by the Mini LED backlighting. In practice, this makes it easier to visualize landforms and radar or AIS targets.
Sounder integration: an all-in-one approach on board
The traditional xCHIRP module, combined with ultra-high-definition scanning, provides a highly detailed view of the bottom. The RapidReturn function increases the refresh rate, useful for drift fishing or precise prospecting. For both sea and freshwater fishing, this configuration is particularly suited to experienced anglers.
5 GHz Wi-Fi connectivity and BlueNet? network: the bar becomes a hub
The GPSMAP 9000xsv can connect to 5 GHz Wi-Fi, which speeds up map updates via the ActiveCaptain application. Above all, it's the ability to create a high-speed data network with the Garmin BlueNet system that changes the game: data sharing between displays, radar, cameras, depth finders... But this requires careful consideration of your electrical installation and display priorities.
SailAssist functions: from gadget to real tool?
For sailing, layline, polar or wind data are available via the SailAssist module. For coastal racing or to optimize tacking, these functions are practical, but require fine calibration of the sensors to be usable.
Mapping: options and limits
Garmin offers two mapping ranges: Navionics+ and Navionics Vision+. Relief shading and satellite images are a plus for coastal anchorages. The Auto Guidance+ function aids planning, but is no substitute for a constant eye on the road.
