In the wake of storm Patricia, everyone is reminded that severe weather is not just a winter phenomenon. This is an opportunity to take a look at the weather and best practices.

Not-so-summer cruises...

While a heatwave has been affecting the Mediterranean for several months, the summer of 2023 is not being marked by clement weather across Europe. Instead, the English Channel and the Atlantic are facing a series of lows more reminiscent of November than St. John's Day. The latest of these, named Patricia, left many yachtsmen stranded in port. An opportunity to take a look at the origin of these storm names but also to best practices for dealing with severe summer weather.

Without even mentioning storms, our interest in the weather is sharpened, and we'll be able to ask questions about its effects beyond wind and waves. A a reminder of the influence of atmospheric pressure on sea level is never useless...

Enjoying the spectacle of storms

But once you've spent that time thinking, you'll want to put your nose outside and admire the waves breaking on the shore. The spectacle of sea power is always a fascination for any sailor, and awe-inspiring for those who face it at sea. Superb shots of the last Fastnet, in the middle of the Solent this is a fitting end to a journey in the footsteps of the storm.

Let's hope, though, for the sake of August cruisers, that we'll also be able to enjoy some pretty pictures of sunny anchorages and long tacks in a thermal wind... See you in the coming weeks!
