The Madeira archipelago includes several interesting islands. Before exploring the lesser known ones, let's discover its main island.

Madeira, the capital island

With its 750 km², Madeira alone represents 90% of the land area.

Arrival in Funchal in the early morning. A massive silhouette of a dark brown floating object approaches nonchalantly. Of a style not very common in our marinas, there is no doubt: it is neither a Jeanneau, nor a Bénéteau, and even less one of those originals that try to compete with them. This is a replica of the "Santa Maria" from Colombâeuros!

Stopover at the rhythm of the Mini

Soon, we anchor quietly in the outer harbor, ending a carefree five-day crossing from the Azores. During our passage, the Mini Transat organized a stage from Madeira. We had the chance to live Funchal at the rhythm of the stopover of this fabulous race. The departure of the competitors for a transatlantic race aboard 6.5 meter boats was a delightful sight.

The ballet of the cruise ships is a sign of a strong tourist activity. This is not surprising, as Funchal is a beautiful city. Before going to recharge our batteries in more authentic places, we take the opportunity to stroll around and visit the many museums.

A long day, fun and cultural, at the Story Centre will make us know more about the history of Madeira.

Then, the cable car lifts our body and mind to the hill of the splendid tropical garden Monte Palace .

Forts overlooking the island

If you miss the departure of the last cable car, you will have to go down on foot. On the hillside, the view from Forte de Pico allows us to imagine ourselves back in the old days. We watch over the entrance of those trading ships through which good or bad news arrived. Sometimes, alas, they were pirate ships armed to the teeth, ready to pounce to gut and dislodge the â??EurospÃ'v'mondeâ?.

The fort of Sao Tiago offers a sumptuous view of the old city. Behind its ochre facades, it houses the Museum of Contemporary Art. The Quinta Vigia is the residence of the president of the government. The archipelago is an autonomous region of Portugal. Madeira is a place to meet other boaters, but also an opportunity to meet beautiful islanders.

Carlos Jorge, luthier by trade, is a fascinating character. He produces and repairs different kinds of guitars and mandolins. In particular these small instruments with four or five times two strings which are specific to Portugal and Madeira. The same ones you hear in the fado, this beautiful melancholic music. He also makes ukuleles, which are occasionally ordered from Polynesia.

The port of Machico

The very comfortable anchorage of Machico gives access to the very pleasant fishing harbor and is the starting point for many hikes. Although we are a bit lost, the path that leads to the harbor of Canical offers a picturesque and bucolic walk along the shore.
