Sunbeam 32.1: A sailing boat as a platform for life on the water

The latest addition from the Austrian shipyard, the Sunbeam 32.1 is sure to confuse sailing purists. But this aggressive-looking yacht is not lacking in good ideas.

A sailboat to enjoy life on the water

When Sunbeam Yachts designed the new Sunbeam 32.1, the Austrian boatbuilder began with the observation that in Austria, a sailboat is only really under sail 10% of the time. So he decided to build something "for fun" and life on the water, while at anchor. He thus broke many codes, working both with his usual naval architect J&J, but also with the industrial designer Gerald Kiska.

Opening to the outside world

The result is a design that is marked to say the least. The styling elements are sometimes a little excessive, but they do not leave one indifferent. The large trapezoidal hull glazing at the front underlines an astonishing rising chine. The massive sprit contributes to widen the deck area, where the inverted bow could have reduced it. A large window in front of the roof completes the opening of the cabin to the outside.

With a displacement of more than 4 tons for a length of 9.98 meters and a width of almost 3 meters, the Sunbeam 32.1 is clearly not a racing boat. Its 60 m2 of sail area should nevertheless allow you to enjoy a few tacks.

Comfortable living on deck

The cockpit, classically arranged around a central table, has two steering wheels, around which the maneuvers are concentrated, with 2 winches on either side. These two tightly packed helm stations leave the rest of the space for relaxing on the water.

The wide transom is open, and instead of a classic tilting platform that closes the cockpit when it is in the up position, Sunbeam has chosen a telescopic system. The platform, XXL in size for a 36-footer, has a moderate rear freeboard and is retracted by electric jacks under the cockpit floor. The summer swimming on the big Austrian lakes is then of great comfort!

Even when sailing, passengers will be able to rest comfortably on the front deck, explains the shipyard. With the roof extending to the sides well in front of the front window, they have a secure space to sit or lie down and enjoy the view.

An interior like home

Once inside the boat, one discovers an entirely open interior, flooded with light from both the roof and hull windows.

The forward point is used as a sleeping area, with a view to the front, while a U-shaped square can accommodate people.

On the port side, the galley looks like a home kitchen, with an amazing storage cabinet closed by a sliding shutter.

On the starboard side, the Sunbeam 32.1 has a comfortable bathroom with integrated shower.

At the stern, a double transverse berth is located under the cockpit floor. In the aft bulkhead, which separates the engine room from the technical area, doors with integrated fittings are cleverly arranged.

The Sunbeam 32.1 is priced at around 220,000 euros, depending on options.
