A new race on the program for the Ultim trimarans, the Finistère Atlantique, which starts in Concarneau on July 1, looks like a trial run before the Route du Rhum. The course has been unveiled, but the list of skippers remains uncertain, against the backdrop of the legal battle between François Gabart and the class.

1st edition of the Finistère Atlantique

The summer program of Ultim trimarans is expanding with a new event in 2022. Supported by the Action Enfance foundation, already a sponsor in the past of Loïck Peyron and Amélie Grassi, which works for the reception in children's villages of young people placed in care by court order, the race, called Finistère Atlantique Challenge Action Enfance, will start from Concarneau on July 1st.

The race will be run with a crew, with 6 sailors on board the trimarans. The 6415 mile course will take the flying multihulls on a triangle in the North Atlantic, leaving the tip of Brittany to turn south towards the island of Lanzarote before heading towards Pico in the Azores and then turning their bows back towards their starting port. The race is expected to last 6 to 8 days depending on the conditions at a time of year when the Azores high pressure system can be strong and impact the weather in the area.

A warm-up tour before the Route du Rhum

The Finistère Atlantique takes over from the short-lived Brest Atlantiques and hopes to become a meeting place for Ultims every two years. "It's an opportunity to showcase the platforms and their performance. It's also a foretaste of the Route du Rhum, but with a crew and a great visibility at the beginning of the season." explains Matthieu Sarrot, director of OC Sport, organizer of the race.

4 participants are now confirmed: Actual, Maxi Edmond de Rotschild (Gitana), Banque Populaire and Sodebo. The arrival of Arthur Le Vaillant will depend on the progress of his project on the former Actual trimaran. But the real question is about the participation of François Gabart, whose home port is Concarneau, but in conflict, now in court with the Ultim Class on the conformity of his trimaran. "As an organizer, we hope that if there is no consensus, there will at least be compromise." said Matthieu Sarrot in conclusion, even though the legal proceedings were not yet official.
