Web series / Building a speed record sailboat: From the plan to the first infused parts

The SP80 challenge team is broadcasting a new episode of the video series on the construction of its strange boat designed to break the absolute speed record on water under sail. In this third episode, the future pilot takes us to the Persico shipyard to see the first parts of the boat being made.

From the plan to the first parts of the boat

The Swiss of the SP80 collective have developed a machine halfway between plane and boat, propelled by a kite. With it, their objective is to exceed the speed of 80 knots on water and beat the existing records. They share in a series of videos with an extremely clear educational tone the technical adventure that such a project represents and the choices they make. After the choice of materials in the first episode and the development of manufacturing plans in the second in this new episode, it is time to move from theory to physical parts.

Moulds of parts, infusion, controleuros

Benoît, future pilot of the boat, presents the 14 molds that were used to manufacture the different elements of the boat. He explains the choice of materials for these tools and the manufacturing and firing process.

We discover the working conditions, worthy of a hospital, in which the employees of the Persico shipyard, a renowned builder of ocean racing and top-of-the-range regatta boats, work. The autoclave, of great dimensions, allows the cooking under pressure of the different elements of the Swiss team's record-breaking machine.

Benoît also goes back to a little-known but essential element, non-destructive testing, which makes it possible to ensure the quality of the work by probing the composite with ultrasound.
