Put together your registration file
In order to be eligible to take the boat licence exam, you must first compile a registration file consisting of a medical certificate and tax stamps to the value of 108 euros. It is possible to take the licence from the age of 16, with parental authorisation.
A two-stage training course
Boating licence training is generally done in two stages. The first stage consists of theoretical training in an approved training centre, lasting a minimum of 5 hours. It is to be completed with online courses and exam training. The code books and a learning booklet with personal identification number are usually provided to you by your training organization.
When you feel ready to pass your code, you will take a 30 question multiple choice exam. Only 5 errors will be accepted for validation of the exam. The result is immediate.
The code is valid for 18 months before taking the practical exam. The duration of the test is a minimum of 3 hours 30 minutes and must be validated by the training institution. To navigate on canals, rivers and streams, the basic licence is the Inland Water Licence which allows you to drive boats up to 20 m long. Beyond this size, there is also the Great River Yachting extension.
