Sailing souvenir / Purely as a sailor, Arnaud Boissières shares his pleasure of being at sea

Arnaud Boissières is a contemplative. In this podcast, he shares his joy of being at sea when his well-tuned sailboat slips on the water. While preparing for his fourth participation in the Vendée Globe, he looks back on his pleasure of sailing in an IMOCA boat.

I'm currently preparing my fourth Vendée Globe. There are moments at sea when you find yourself in the middle of the ocean, which I find extraordinary and which I like. So it's a bit like the sensations of an ordinary sailor on a rather extraordinary course, which is the round the world voyage.

The moment that I particularly appreciate is when we're far from the Canaries, we've got trade winds, the boat is going fast and without too much spray, just a bit of spray at the bow to get my boat a bit wet and we tell ourselves that we're extraordinarily lucky to be able to experience that on a boat that's so strong such extreme boats, boats of 18 m, such a big mast. The boat is fine the computer says that we are at full capacity with the boat, and everything is good.

You close your eyes, you listen to some music and you say: "it's extraordinary." And the icing on the cake is when the dolphins arrive... You think you're living a dream, and when I was a kid, I dreamed of going around the world and I end up being an actor and you think: "What a chance and what a privilege I have!" So all that recharges the batteries and you think that on a world tour there are bound to be more difficult moments. In those moments, you think: "I'm going to take the good stuff, because there's going to be a need for it afterwards."

These are moments when it is an extreme pleasure and feeling. It doesn't last for days and days, sometimes it only lasts an hour or half an hour, but super-intense moments of happiness where you let yourself dream a little, or at least tell yourself that you're at sea.
