We presented you the book Voiliers de rêve written by François Chevalier and illustrated with Gilles Martin-Raget's photos (find the presentation here). In our presentation, we were enthusiastic about the quality of the precise and well-documented texts, but also about the choice of photos that show the boats as a whole while not hesitating to use a full page just to present a detail.
This book, Voiliers de rêve, presents 14 classic sailboats telling the story of their construction, their successive owners, but also their class. The only criticism we had of this book was that it was too small to accommodate large enough photos and that the text had to be printed in a very small font. We didn't know it, this book is actually a reduction of a much larger book that we are presenting to you today. By reducing the size, the editor makes it possible to make it accessible in terms of price. Indeed, Voiliers de rêve is available at 24.95 euros while the box set we present here is sold for 100 euros..
Because it is really a box set, which contains the book, but also a splendid 35.5 x 27 cm photo showing Eilean with all sails outside going towards a grain. Small or large, the books are almost identical in detail near their title (Dream Sailboats or Classic Yachts) and the number of sailboats presented. Indeed, the "small" edition includes 14 portraits of sailboats, while the second edition includes 18 portraits. Added to this edition are: Alcyon, Topaz, Marga and Columbia.
Quality glossy paper offers a better rendering for photos that gain vitality (the small edition is printed on matte paper). The large size of the book also gives this book a greater breath and each page is a joy. We also like particularly precise and lively texts, but sticking to history without ever inventing it.
