Aboard the Petrel 46 chartered by the Glénans Cruise School the crew, consisting of a captain and trainees, encountered a wide variety of conditions. Despite the lack of precise weather data, the boat was able to sail, encountering strong winds, fortunately only downwind. This is the skipper's succinct story.
The stopovers for this stage were:
Quebec - Cap à l'Aigle (in the St. Lawrence) - Ile du Bic (near Rimouski) - Grande-Grave (northern entrance to Gaspé Bay) - Magdalen Islands - Port Hawkesbury in the Canso Canal - Halifax - Lubec and Eastport (in the Bay of Fundy)- Bar Harbor on Mount Desert Island (Maine) - Swans Island (Maine) - Portland and Boston.
Total number of miles flown: 1500 Miles
Weather side: Wind from 0 to 45 N (downwind!)
Forecasts that are permanently completely false from Quebec City to Halifax (except for the 45 N gale forecast between the Madeleine and the Canso Canal)
1st third downwind, 2nd third upwind and last third to the engine.
- Dolphins: 20
- Seal: 40
- Whales: 0 whole and 20 reconstituted!
From the engine, the GV alone (plus engine) GV+Yankee, upwind, downwind, scissor sails, spinnaker, genaker, GV1ris, GV 2 reefs + staysail, staysail alone (!), and again the engine... in short we tested everything.
