First Canadian victory in the Race to Alaska 2024

Canadian team Malolo won the eighth edition of the Race to Alaska (R2AK), crossing the finish line at 14:36 on June 17, 2024. Made up of skipper Duncan Gladman and crew members Paul Gibson, Becky Kelly and Matthew Macatee, the team sailed and pedaled without a motor on their Cochrane-built Dragon trimaran covering the 750 nautical miles from Port Townsend, Washington, to Ketchikan, Alaska.

A unique challenge for seasoned sailors

The Race to Alaska is a demanding competition without engine or assistance, testing participants' physical endurance, navigational skills and tenacity. First prize is $10,000, while the runner-up wins a set of steak knives. The first leg, "The Proving Ground", started at 5:00 a.m. on June 8, 2024, with the aim of crossing the Strait of Juan de Fuca to Victoria, BC, in under 36 hours. The second leg, "To the Bitter End", began at noon on June 12, a 710-mile journey to Alaska.

Perseverance rewarded

For Team Malolo, this victory is synonymous with perseverance and redemption. This was their third attempt to win the R2AK with their trimaran Dragon. In 2019, Gladman had already won the steak knives as captain of the Pear Shaped Racing team. In the 2022 edition, Gladman and Gibson had to retire after colliding with a tree trunk at high speed, severely damaging their boat.

"The teams had to navigate 750 nautical miles of unpredictable conditions without engines."

Team Malolo's Dragon trimaran, custom-built by Cochrane, was put to the test. Weather conditions and floating debris in the water were constant challenges. The team's ability to maintain a high speed despite these obstacles is a testament to their skill and the strength of their craft.

A traditional triumph

Team Malolo will celebrate their victory at the Alaska Fish House in Ketchikan with an impromptu awards ceremony at 6pm on June 18, 2024. In keeping with tradition, their $10,000 prize will be nailed to a log. The second-place team, still racing with 90 miles to go, may also receive their steak knives at the ceremony.

"The 2024 edition of the R2AK still sees 29 teams out of the original 32 sailing to Ketchikan."

Although Team Malolo has crossed the finish line, the adventure continues for the other participants. The difficult conditions of the Inside Passage continue to test the skills and determination of the sailors still in the race.

The Race to Alaska: a unique event

Organized by the Northwest Maritime Center in Port Townsend, WA, the Race to Alaska is an annual event that attracts teams from all over the world. This non-motorized, non-assisted race celebrates maritime tradition and promotes the spirit of adventure and discovery.
