Ocean Data System, based in Lorient since 2001, is an expert in on-board solutions for the safety, monitoring and control of systems dedicated mainly to sailboat propulsion. For almost 15 years, the Lorient-based company has been actively working to offer a range of electronic and mechanical solutions, meeting the needs of ocean racing, pleasure boating, yachting and naval applications.
UpSideUp, historically designed to prevent the capsizing of racing multihulls (Route du Rhum 2006) by automatically slackening the sheets, is the flagship product in the range of onboard mechatronic solutions developed by Ocean Data System. Today, the solution is widely used on all types of multihulls, from racing trimarans such as Ultims, to pleasure and cruising catamarans and sailing yachts.
But the UpSideUp is just as indispensable for multihull cruising, whether alone, with family or as a couple, for obvious reasons of safety and peace of mind on board, since it allows you to sail as close as possible to the boat's nominal performance. So much time and energy freed up to enjoy sailing to the full!
UpSideUp ensures on-board safety by interacting with the equipment and/or warning the crew. It continuously measures heel and trim, as well as rig forces, using onboard sensors. It also monitors wind strength, sea state and water depth. In the event of a critical situation, it activates alarms and acts on the autopilot and sheet release actuators. It also features a man-overboard management function unrivalled on the market, as well as flooding detection.
UpSideUp offers a comprehensive and relevant range of services, while ensuring ease of use. Three versions (Easy, Master, SuperYachts) are available, depending on the type of project, all of which can be configured à la carte according to the user's needs, navigation program, boat type and budget (choice of options, sensors, actuators).
Ocean Data System also offers the NDR (Navigation Data Recorder), dedicated to recording all the boat's data to determine facts and aid expertise in the event of an accident or problem on board. The NDR traces the history of the boat's activity and the atypical conditions encountered throughout its lifetime. It memorizes all maxima (effort, heel, wind, speed, etc.) and the time the sails have been in use (ideal for maintenance). Combined with a satellite transmission system, it can automatically transmit data to a shore station. It's an effective tool for insurance experts, rental companies and shipyard after-sales departments. Its context-sensitive recording functions offer precise and efficient data analysis possibilities for design offices, architects and technical teams.
With its SailControl solution, Ocean Data System has developed a fully parameterizable system dedicated to monitoring and instrumentation of sailboats. SailControl supervises the entire rig and appendages, and more generally everything to do with wind propulsion and the forces induced on the boat's structural elements. Although it is used, for example, on the WindStar, a 4-masted sailing liner, to manage its 6 sails, i.e. no less than 2,000m², it is mainly intended for sailing yachts and racing monohulls for which automatic actions on the sails and/or an autopilot are not required or not authorized. The SailControl will be used on IMOCA yachts in the forthcoming Vendée Globe.
In 2019, Ocean Data System unveils its new Human Machine Interface (HMI) designed to link all the process control solutions on offer. UpSideUp version Master and SuperYacht are already delivered with this new version of its ControlCenter, monitoring and parameter-setting software installed on the on-board computer.
Ergonomics, access to information and aesthetics are of the highest quality. The software is simple to use and understand, requiring no special training. Data is displayed in the form of graphical visual elements (widgets), which can take the form of bar charts, pie charts, time plots, etc.
The software presents the information determined by the user's constraints, profile and level of expertise. It is also the user who defines, according to his own needs and objectives, the level and type of information to be displayed by the software. This interface has been developed to facilitate access to information in all circumstances, enhance the user experience and optimize the efficiency of the services delivered.
UpSideUp's ControlCenter offers standard, ready-to-use monitoring and parameterization screens to meet all the needs of the solution. The SuperYacht version, like the SailControl solution, can be customized by Ocean Data System's engineers, or by the technical team of the project or shipyard wishing to offer its customers a GUI adapted to its brand's graphic charter.
