Sun Odyssey 40: designed for long cruising or regattas

How to choose your used boat ? This week, the Sun Odyssey 40. One of Jeanneau's best-sellers, she is still very much appreciated by skippers who want to sail offshore with their families - but also by lovers of beautiful hulls.

  • Price: from 60 000 euros
  • 1,052 units built from 1998 to 2006

One hull, three variations... this Andrieu plan was presented to the public for the first time in 1997 under the name "Andrieu" Sun Odyssey 40 DS . Large panoramic deckhouse and wise rigging, this model is a pure owner's cruiser. One year later, two versions of this well-balanced hull are launched: the Sun Fast 40 with its extended rigging and lead ballast and the Sun Odyssey 40 More versatile with a cast iron keel - 1.95 or 1.50 m draft and a slightly shorter rig.

A great commercial success

Of these three models, the 40 we are interested in has been by far the most successful, both with rental companies and private individuals. In fact, the shipyard had anticipated this double demand with two possible layouts - two or three cabins. The balanced lines - the design of the deckhouse remains very up-to-date - and the undeniable marine qualities of this model have done the rest - more than 1,000 yachts have been built. In 2003, Jeanneau made a few minor modifications to the deck layout and interior by introducing the Sun Odyssey 40.3.

A lot of potential under sail

Obviously, in its standard configuration with lambda sails, fixed propeller and approximate hull condition, the Sun Odyssey won't work miracles: it is a rather lively cruiser at all speeds and always pleasant to steer. But if you make the effort to prepare it a little - or even a lot - this model proves to be very surprising and capable of holding its own at much sharper units. The long ballast version brings a clear upwind bonus, especially in terms of heading in the breeze. There is also a weight saving of 250 kg. From there to racing, there is only one length... especially as the rating of the Sun Odyssey 40, both in IRC and Osiris, is rather favourable.

Cruise type deck plan

With its cockpit table with two flaps and its forward sheeting area in front of the companionway hood, the Sun Odyssey 40 is a good choice for cruisers... the two helm stations preserve a passage to the aft skirt. The whistle deckhouse leaves little room for a real foredeck but still preserves the side decks. When cruising, nothing to complain about except for the power of the genoa winches, just a little in the breeze. On the other hand, a large crew in regattas will be able to adapt.

Accommodation with two or three cabins

Two or three cabins, one or two toilets, that's the different configurations of accommodation. The L-shaped galley adjoins the companionway on starboard, followed by the saloon - convertible into a double berth. Opposite, a convivial chart table, as it is equipped with a double seating area. The storage capacity is suitable for long cruising - as long as the crew is limited to four people. The finish is rather flattering.

The diagnosis of Bateaux.com

This still recent model displays vintages from 1998 to 2006. Eight years is already a long career. Two data which explain the large price differences observed between the very first models built and the most recent 40.3. Few major problems are noted, the Sun Odyssey 40 ages well. We'll look at the condition of the engine, sails and all peripherals - electricity, plumbing, etc. - as well as the condition of the engine and sails. The advantage of a model such as this, which is very popular, is its availability and therefore the possibility of comparing the equipment of the different models on the second-hand market.

The advantages

  • Elegant sailboat
  • Extensive sailing program
  • Robust structure

Disadvantages

  • Undersized genoa winches
  • Mainsail clew too far forward
  • Short ballast version with significantly less performance upwind

But what is he missing?

Not much... except maybe a cockpit and a slightly wider rear skirt.

The equivalent today?

The Sun Odyssey 410, with its aft chines, straight bow, integrated pulpit and gently sloping catwalks to the rear of the cockpit.
