"Sound of Sea", the ocean distress call

The NGO Sea Shepherd has launched a video awareness campaign to change citizens' seafood consumption habits. Overfishing, rites, by-catches empty our oceans and according to the United Nations, there will be no more fish by 2048.

"Sound of Sea" or the SOS de l'Océan is an underwater sound broadcast in early April off La Rochelle at the initiative of the NGO Sea Shepherd. The cry of an aching ocean, whose animals are hunted down and killed, more than necessary. The cry of our oceans relayed by the French freediver Guillaume Néry on social networks quickly became viral. The cry of this blue lung that covers 70% of our planet and provides us with food and oxygen.

The origin of "Sound Of Sea"

To achieve this cry of distress, the NGO defending the oceans mixed 30 existing sounds of dying animals: a harpooned whale in the Arctic Ocean, pilot whales hunted on the Faroe Islands, dolphins caught in the mesh of a fisherman, the frenetic agitation of schools of clutched fish in the trawlers' nets.

Marine mammals and fish are hunted and killed in large numbers, almost in a state of general indifference. However, just because we do not hear it and see it does not mean that their agony does not exist.

"In 6 weeks, between January and March 2019, 1?100 dolphins were found stranded on the French coast, many of them reportedly victims of fishing" says the NGO.

These sounds have been sorted before being amplified, worked on and juxtaposed, giving life to a unique sound: "Sound of Sea": the S.O.S of the ocean.

A specially developed tag

The sound was emitted from a spherical beacon immersed in the ocean off La Rochelle. The latter was specially designed and manufactured for several weeks by a team of oceanographers and engineers.

This bubble, which could spread the ocean's cry of distress without damaging the surrounding ecosystem, was only submerged for a few hours to film the operation.
