Navicom distributes several brands of marine electronics manufacturers. Among these, KVH offered a "gyrocompass" adopted by all sailing competitors and professional fishermen. However, this model has been discontinued. To replace it, Navicom now distributes the Lars Thrane LT-1000 compass.
12 sensors in addition to the electronic compass
The LT-1000 compass is an electronic compass with 12 additional sensors. Examples include an accelerometer, heel angle measurements, pitch measurements, and a barometer and thermometer. But above all this compass integrates a 72-channel GNSS receiver. With him he can give precisely the position and speed based on the GPS network, GLONASS and BeiDou with the precision enhanced by the SBAS (satellite differential).
Thus equipped, despite the roll or pitch, the heading always remains very precise and exact. This compass integrates intelligence with filters to correct the information based on the data from all sensors.
Dual connectivity
The LT-1000 delivers its information via the NMEA 2000 and 183 network. It can also send information on both networks simultaneously. It is configured by connecting it to a computer via in-house software. The configuration is very precise because it is even possible to filter the different NMEA sentences to keep only the most useful ones, thus increasing transfer speeds, to deliver information very quickly.
This dual NMEA connection makes it compatible with all players in embedded electronics such as NKE or B&G for example.
For offshore racing or fishermen
This compass is of course widely used on all offshore racing yachts (IMOCA, Class 40...) but also on Ultim multihulls (it was on board Banque populaire during the Route du Rhum 2018). Yvan Bourgnon also used it on his catamaran during his North West Passage under sail. Competitors use it to manage their autopilot, which requires very precise and fast heading information.
This type of compass is also used on the bridge of trawlers to manage the radar and autopilot.
Available and cheap
This Danish product is available at a very competitive price of 899 ? HT which makes it very attractive as soon as you want to perform under pilot. It is distributed in France by Navicom.
