Iodized memories of a skipper with Justine Mettraux

Justine Mettraux is a Swiss skipper who after sailing in a Mini 6.50 and then in the Volvo Ocean Race has embarked on the Figaro Bénéteau circuit. She is starting a new season on the Figaro Bénéteau 3 in the Teamwork colours.

What is your first memory at mer??

It's not at sea, but on Lake Geneva since I'm Swiss. I made my first family trips there with my brothers and sisters and my parents. They had an Elan 33 and we would go sailing during the holidays or on sunny days.

What triggered you to launch yourself into this carrière??

It was done little by little. But the trigger that made me want to devote more time to boating was a sailing camp in the south of France, where I signed up when I was 16. He was a Swiss skipper who had set him up to train young people under sail.

The idea was to be able to skipper a boat at sea safely, to acquire the skills and the right attitude to bring people on board.

Have you had a mentor or another skipper who has marqué? for you?

The mentors were Jean-Paul Besler, who organized this camp at sea, and Bertrand Delesne, who was also sponsored before me at Teamwork. He helped me on my Mini project and I did a lot of double shopping with him.

It is important to have this kind of people, who push us, who help us to do better and invest in our projects.

Which boat left you the best souvenir??

I would still say the multihulls on which we race in Switzerland. The D35 and M2 are cool boats. (The Decision 35 is a one-design series of 35-foot sports catamarans dedicated to regattas on Lake Geneva and the Ventilo M2 One Design is a 28-foot one-design, pure Swiss product) . In this article, we will see how to roll up long ends. In this example the technique is described for a right-handed person.

What is your greatest success with marin??

My 7th place in the Solitaire du Figaro, in 2017 for my 2nd participation. I was really satisfied.

On a daily basis, what is your practice of plaisance??

I don't have much time to do it. Even though cruising is part of my training, I have been doing it since I was a child. I also made some long-distance trips.

I still enjoy boating, but I don't have much time to do it. But as soon as I have the opportunity and a little time, I go on a cruise on Lake Geneva where I try to do things a little different. I have a friend who makes expeditions to the North, to Norway for example, and that's something I like to do.

What is your favorite navigation area and the one you redoutes??

My favourite sailing area is Brittany and the one I dread, I don't know.

If you hadn't been a skipper, what would you have fait??

I would have taught. It's my basic training, I'm a teacher.
