Photographer Robert Doisneau is known for his suburban portraits, photos that are always very urban, even if the human remains the centre. But this man, who had his picture pinned to his body, was still walking around with his camera on his shoulder, even during his seaside vacation.
It is these photos, taken as part of reports or during his holidays, that Glénat has compiled in a book entitled "Allons voir la mer". Francine's vision of her daughter's photo shoots "which were supposed to last only a few minutes", but which took hours, is undoubtedly the most exciting part of this book.
In addition to the splendid images, we find in this story, a portrait of the photographer who could not let go during his holidays, his eye always sharpened and the camera ready to shoot. Francine will say, "I don't think I've ever seen my father in a bathing suit."
The explanations on his way of working, on the subjects commissioned or improvised show us another image of this photographer. In particular, we will appreciate the pages devoted to days at sea with fishermen, images of the shoreline that show the work of these seafarers.
In addition to the presentation of this photographer, this book also tells of a bygone era when holidays by the sea were the Grail of a year's work. A period guided by the famous paid holidays.
In this context, Robert Doisneau's photographic testimony illustrates well the sweetness of living in the summers of that period. Some pictures (quite rare) also show the pleasure of sailing with its pretty wooden sailboats with slender lines.
