Plan your supplies for a long cruise

For a long cruise, it is essential to plan the quantities of food and drinks. We shouldn't find ourselves in the middle of the Atlantic without food! But how to manage the bunkering? What to plan and in what quantity? Here are some lines of thought. Feel free to share your methods with us.

Put things on paper

When you go on a long cruise, you should remember to stock up on food and drinks for long cruises. We can then refuel during the stopovers. Remember that depending on where you are sailing, you will not necessarily find the same products. So find out beforehand, even if it means increasing the stocks of these chocolate bars that you cannot do without..

The number of people on board, the number of days of uninterrupted cruising, the sailing programme, the location and, above all, the tastes of each person, will be taken into account. Our diet will not change significantly overnight... If there are children on board or babies, it will also be necessary to provide suitable meals (powdered milk, small jars...).

We tend to eat more when it is cold - especially hot and caloric products - than when it is hot - where salads, fruits and vegetables are welcome. It also depends on the number of meals you make: snacks, snacks, night shifts, etc. Also plan according to your equipment Oven, gas cooker or stove, marine kitchen or not, etc.

Finally, everything will also depend on the space you have on board and the load the boat can carry in addition to the water and fuel. Conservation opportunities must also be considered. We will not buy the same products if we have a fridge on board (which is often the case on long cruises), or even a freezer (rarer).

Once your program is established, all you have to do is calculate the quantities according to your needs: produce x number of people x number of days. Don't forget to provide an extra reserve in case of problems, especially for water.

Plan for the unexpected

In bad weather, or because you simply don't have the time, plan something to eat on the go: canned dishes already prepared (that you can buy or prepare yourself, soup). Freeze-dried dishes are also a good option. All you have to do is heat some water to add it to your prepared dish before enjoying it. A hot, quick meal! Not to mention it takes up very little space!

Schedule night shifts

During night shifts, we also burn calories and need to eat. So bring small snacks such as cakes, cereal bars, chocolate bars, compotes, dried fruit, etc. Easy and quick to swallow, but satisfies a stomach.

Plan for the little pleasures

If you love to snack, you won't stop sailing. The sea air, it digs! So don't neglect these little"extras" that might seem out of place and that once you're on the water you'll miss terribly.

Also plan the events (birthday, party...), you might like to open the bottle of champagne for your birthday or any special event.
