Often the beautiful books are content to drink us in beautiful pictures. But on the text side, it's much lighter. The book Maewan, which tells us about the adventure of the sailboat of the same name, intoxicates us with breathtaking images. But the text that describes this adventure is a real dream catch in which I plunged myself into so that I couldn't get out before the end!
Maewan is the story of an 11.80m aluminium dinghy that travelled from the coast of North Brittany to Russia via the Northwest Passage (North America). This feat achieved in 2 seasons is the fruit of the dream of her skipper Erwan Le Lann, more mountainous than seafaring.
Aboard Maewan, 38 people will be taking turns as climbers and sailors, all with a strong taste for adventure. The story begins and ends with some stormy crossings. In the middle, extraordinary adventures with animal or human encounters that make you want to put your bag on board.
In his text Erwan Le Lann does not hide the problems of human relations on such a small isolated boat in these difficult seas, where even at night at anchor an iceberg may hit you. His description of the continuous stress of the skipper in charge of his crew and his boat, having to manage everything without taking the time to decompress shows the total commitment to the adventure. His relationship with his boat, an unknown at the start, is also very well described.
"Maewan, the Arctic Adventure" is the adventure book par excellence in the lineage of the great sea stories. As beautifully illustrated as it is well written, the story of this adventure makes you want to discover what happens next. The sequel has not yet been written and will take place in the coming seasons.
