Royal Huisman begins construction of the world's largest aluminium sailboat

Project RH400

It is called Project RH400 and is 266 feet (81 m) long, making it one of the top 10 largest sailing yachts in the world. Above all, it will be the first sailing yacht to be built entirely out of aluminium. Built for an Asian client, following her presentation at the Monaco Yacht Show 2016, she will be a luxurious, high-performance ocean-going sailing yacht. Delivery is planned for 2020.

The world's largest all-aluminium sailing boat

The construction of the world's largest aluminium sailing yacht has just started at the Dutch Royal Huisman shipyard for an Asian client. This contemporary three-masted schooner, 266 feet (81 m) long, is codenamed Project RH400. Designed for performance, the yacht will have a straight bow and according to tests, will be able to reach a speed of 20 knots. The owner's goal is to be able to sail around the world, quickly and in the greatest comfort.

The project was unveiled as a world premiere by the shipyard and the Dykstra Naval Architects (and designers Mark Whiteley and Bart Kimman from Northrop and Johnson Asia) at the Monaco Yacht Show 2016. It will be the largest yacht ever built at the Royal Huisman shipyard - which has had to adapt its largest hall - and will be among the top 10 largest sailing yachts in the world.

Over the past year, the yard has completed the design phase, construction planning and much of the engineering for this iconic yacht - in close interaction with the owner, his team and the architects. The keel is now laid and construction of the main deck has already started and the rigging will be carbon.

"The vertical bow, long waterline, slender hull and large sail area will give the yacht the speed and good performance required." says Thys Nikkels of Dykstra Naval Architects.

Comfort on board and modernity

The interior design is modern, in balance with the outdoor living spaces. The design is based on light wood partitions and oak floors. The owner has requested a high level of comfort on board for family cruising, but the yacht can also be used as a place for business. The yacht can accommodate 12 guests and 13 crew on board.

The forward part of the superstructure has been reserved for the owner and his guests, with a lounge/dining room with a dining table for 16 people.

Among the main features, the Project RH400 will have a large sundeck with a helm station and full navigational equipment. The sheltered cockpit on the main deck has a bar, sofas and a large outdoor dining area. A unique sliding door system, created by Rondal, will allow easy access to the main saloon.

Entertainment on board will be plentiful, with a wide range of toys on offer, such as sea scooters, paddle boards, kayaks and two tenders. But the most fun entertainment will undoubtedly be a hydraulic platform allowing you to climb the mast.
