"Hommage au Belem" has the merit of bringing together 23 official painters of the Navy and 8 Marine writers to celebrate 120 years. The Marines' large feathers provide short texts (between 3 and 6 pages) of sea memories, fictions or stories on board. These texts are completed by illustrations (drawings, paintings, watercolours...) from the paintbrushes of the painters of the Navy.
The Belem is an institution. With its steel hull launched in Nantes in 1896, this three-masted barque, nicknamed"yacht" because of its racy line was first used as a cargo ship to transport cocoa. Then under English flag, it was transformed into a luxury yacht and hidden around the Isle of Wight during the war. It then took the Italian flag and became a training ship with Venice as its home port. It was only in 1979, bought by the Caisse d'Épargne, that the sailboat became French again and regained its original name.
Tributes from this ship take place this year for the 120 years of navigation. This book is an artistic and literary compilation carefully treated in a magnificent work. A beautiful gift idea for lovers of traditional sailing boats or for lovers of beautiful books.
