Shipyard visit / What is Incidence Sails DFi membrane?

To return to the forefront of the racing world, the first French sailmaker, Incidence Sails, developed in 2015 a new filament membrane, the DFi. Discovery of this innovative technological sail.

Incidence Sails will equip 6 IMOCA yachts on the next Vendée Globe out of the 29 that will start the solo round the world race on 6 November 2016

A small minority compared to a few years ago, but which allows the first French sailmaker to return to the world of ocean racing..

Second sailmaker in the world to develop filament membrane sails

After the world leader North Sails, Incidence is the second sailmaker in the world to develop sails made of filamentary membranes. These are made up of pre-impregnated composite strips, deposited following very precise non-parallel trajectories, in order to take up the main and secondary forces applied to the sail while sailing, which gives it lightness and an exceptional shape holding.

In a simplified way, to make this very fine fabric, which looks like a composite (the fibres are impregnated with resin and polymerized), we take a yarn (dyneema, aramid), which we comb to obtain tiny filaments, which are then spread on the sail in the direction of the sail forces. The fabric is then cut and assembled into panels with a lot of material to be resistant, on a huge wooden floor. It will be sold between 1 000 and 150 000 ? depending on its form, its use, its material, etc..
