A Spi Ouest France 2016 with a bitter storm taste

The Spi Ouest France took place in La Trinité-sur-Mer from March 24 to 28, 2016. The harsh weather conditions forced the race committee to cancel the last two days of racing and to contain the smaller boats on land on Saturday, March 26, 2016. Back on a tough edition!

Friday, March 25, Day 1

On Friday March 25th, the Spi Ouest France started under the sun even if the race committees had to review their courses from the start. The day on the water was however perfect. But it was not the same on Saturday March 26 since Météo France issued a special weather bulletin on Friday March 25 with a rough weather, forcing the majority of the boats to stay on land. Christophe Gaumont, the race director, has therefore modified the race program for March 26 "Due to the weather forecast and the issuance of a Special Weather Bulletin (BMS n° 146), announcing a gale-force wind warning with strong gusts in the afternoon, the series on race zones A, B, C as well as the IRC 4, will remain ashore. The IRC 0, 1, 2 and 3, will approach the land, on the zone A, for a first departure at 11 am"

The 18 series entered in the Spi Ouest France âeuros Destination Morbihan have all completed a minimum of three races. In Diam 24, Kinou Mourniac, took the fleet after five races. In the Open 7.50 class, Bertrand de Broc and Marc Guillemot, two great figures in ocean racing, led the way. In the J80 class, two Spanish crews, Van Der Ploeg and La Pedraja, took the lead of the 68-member armada.

Saturday, March 26, Day 2

On Saturday, March 26, only the big IRCs were allowed to return to the water in Quiberon Bay. "Due to the weather forecast (severe gale to gale warning with strong gusts), no racing on zones A, B, C and IRC 4." The small boats remained on land: Diam 24, Open 5.70, J 70, or the Mach 6.5. At the end of the morning, the fleet of 64 IRCs were able to validate their races by returning to the sea early, with gusts of over 40 knots. The competitors crossed the finish line at around 2:00 pm, right on time, since the bay of Quiberon was agitated by a wind passing the 30 knots mark.

In IRC 1, Ker 39 is still leading the ranking thanks to its two previous victories and its 2nd place, despite its 8 e place of the day. He is equal in points with Black Jack, the J 133 of Éric Gicquel from Malouin. In IRC 2, Jean-Pierre Kelbert won the day's race and the overall lead with his JPK 1080, thanks to his 3 second places the day before. Behind him, we find Didier Le Moal, at the helm of his J 122 E. In IRC 3, Daniel Andrieu is well ahead of the other Sun Fast 3200, also leading the race and skippered by Jean-François de Premorel.

Sunday 27 and Monday 28 March, D3 and D4

All the series of the Spi Ouest France were supposed to be in Quiberon Bay for races scheduled at 11 am. But the weather decided otherwise. The storm that raged over the Morbihan forced the organization to cancel the races for all categories of boats. The prize-giving ceremony took place on Monday, March 28, while the first cranes started on Sunday, March 27, at 2:30 p.m., for the J80 and J70. The race village was also closed for security reasons from Sunday March 27 to Monday March 28.
