Since 2010, Marie-Pierre and Dominique have created this unique service in France. Unique, because these two animators both have diplomas of merchant marine captain. A training made compulsory due to the distance of the working area. As a result, the sailing boat named Kyss Cool is armed like a commercial ship with all the safety equipment you would find on a cargo ship! All this to ensure the safety of tomatoes and carrots..
The Kyss adventure began with an administrative obstacle course. How to make the maritime authorities understand that it was necessary to register a commercial sailing ship, more than a hundred years after the disappearance of the last tall ships ? But the passion of the two investigators overcame these administrative obstacles. Today, the company has two boats: the sailboat that spends time at anchor and a large semi-rigid that provides supplies.
The season lasts mainly 2 months. In 2015, it started with the weekends of June (depending on the weather) and should end mid-September. During this period, the Kyss grocery store provides supplies to boaters at anchor. They can either order the day before directly at the boat or by internet, or help themselves to the boat's stock. Bread, pastries and newspaper are provided every morning.
For these two atypical sailors, the day unfolds in the same way. Marie-Pierre is in charge of the RIB and ensures the daily connection with the land. Dominique stays on board to run the store.
If they rely on a Casino for all the consumer products, the fresh products are on the other hand treated by local producers. Marie-Pierre goes every day to the Concarneau fish market for fish and seafood. The bakery is also traditional, as are the cooked products offered by a local caterer.
Currently, the grocery store satisfies between 60 and 100 customers per day. His motto: "All requests are possible to satisfy". Some of them are really surprising, like the volume of dog food for example, or even medicines. Dominique, a trained mechanic, also does maintenance directly at anchor. He sometimes unblocks certain situations to allow the boats to continue their cruise or simply to reach Concarneau.
With Kyss all services are possible. But why Kyss ? Kyss are the initials of Kerné Yachting ServiceS. Kerné translates into Cornouaille in Breton. And ServiceS (with its two S's) takes a very important place in this activity. As Marie-Pierre underlines: "It is not the lure of profit that motivates us, but rather offering a service to boaters. Our investment is essentially passionate."
And since we are talking about finance, you should know that a full tank of food costs about 30% more than the price on the mainland. And a 1 euro cut is taken on each piece of bakery. Only the newspaper is sold at the same price!
