The Oyster 825 "Viva La Vida" Capsizes: A Second Keel Loss Raises Questions Once Again

The Oyster 825 Viva La Vida capsized on August 21, 2026, during Hamilton Island Race Week, after striking a reef and losing its keel bulb. Eleven years after the sinking of the Polina Star III, this is the second Oyster 825 to suffer a major keel loss followed by a capsizing. But while the parallel is striking, no technical link has been established between the two accidents, and one question remains unanswered: why did the Viva La Vida take on so much water after the impact?

Viva La Vida was participating in Hamilton Island Race Week when it struck a reef off Long Island in the Whitsundays on August 21, 2026. The Oyster 825 was sailing under spinnaker at the time. After the impact, the crew issued a Mayday as the yacht began taking on water.

Rescue efforts were coordinated, and an additional pump was delivered to the sailboat. Even with this additional means of pumping out water, its flow rate was insufficient. The yacht listed and then capsized. The ten people on board were rescued with no reported injuries.

The images taken after the capsizing reveal an important detail: the lower part of the keel, which carries the ballast, is no longer present. The upper part of the keel, however, still appears to be attached to the hull.

The loss of the bulb provides a logical explanation for the deterioration in the sailboat's stability after the collision. However, it does not, on its own, explain the extent of the water ingress.

And that's where the accident becomes technically interesting. The available photographs do not show any opening in the hull that could explain the observed flow rate.

We will therefore have to wait for the structure to be stabilized and assessed before we can determine exactly what the consequences of the impact will be.

The previous Polina Star III is bound to come up in the discussion

It?s hard to think of a capsized Oyster 825 with a keel problem without thinking of the Polina Star III, which was lost in 2015.

But for now, the similarities are limited to the ship?s design and the presence of major damage to the keel. After the Polina Star III was salvaged, the damage revealed that the destruction was much more extensive. The keel, its connection to the hull, and a significant portion of the surrounding structure were gone, leaving an opening of approximately 20 m².

The investigation conducted at the time led Oyster to identify a potential vulnerability in the manufacturing process for the internal structure of the first Oyster 825 models. Several units were subsequently inspected and reinforced.

"Viva La Vida" is listed as No. 825, No. 7, and dates from 2019. It therefore belongs to a production phase that followed the modifications made after the 2015 accident. At this point, there is no evidence to establish a common technical cause between the two accidents.

The bailout should provide the answers

After capsizing, the Viva La Vida was secured to prevent it from drifting. The approximately 56-metric-ton sailboat was also stabilized with buoyancy bags. It is scheduled to be towed to Mackay once conditions permit the operation.

As long as the Viva La Vida remains overturned and partially submerged, the photographs will fuel speculation without allowing us to settle the matter. The missing bulb is glaringly obvious, but it isn?t necessarily the sole explanation. The real issue likely lies a few centimeters higher up, inside the structure. And to find out what really happened, we?ll have to pull the Oyster out of the water before drawing any conclusions.
