The Ocean Fifty trimaran Le Rire Médecin - Lamotte capsized off the Var coast on Friday April 24, en route to Sainte Maxime for the start of the first leg of the season. The crew were quickly rescued by the Cavalaire SNSM. The boat will now be taken in for refit.

The incident occurred while the crew was en route to Sainte-Maxime to take part in the first Act of the Ocean Fifty Series.

A capsize downwind in 20 knots of wind

At around 7:30 pm, the trimaran was sailing off Le Lavandou. The boat was progressing downwind, under full mainsail and gennaker, with a steady wind of around 20 knots.

Approaching the Gulf of Saint-Tropez, the crew was preparing a maneuver. An oversold condition combined with a coasting effect led to sudden acceleration. The trimaran spun out of control and capsized.

The entire crew was rescued unharmed. The SNSM of Cavalaire quickly intervened to take care of the sailors.

The trimaran was then secured and towed away. A local mobilization was organized between Cavalaire and Sainte-Maxime, with the support of the technical teams and other crews present in the area.

As Luke Berry points out: "The crew are fine, that's the main thing. I'd like to thank the Cavalaire rescuers. A chain of local solidarity has been set up. We're now going to tow the boat, establish a diagnosis and launch the repairs."

A technical phase before the start of the sporting season

The trimaran will now be righted and inspected to assess the condition of the structure, appendages and rigging.

The technical team will undertake the necessary work, with the aim of returning the boat to sailing condition. While the start of the Ocean Fifty circuit appears to be in jeopardy, the boat is expected to be in good condition by the start of the Route du Rhum 2026, which is just five months away.
