SNIM, an analysis of the 60th edition held in an Olympic harbour

In Marseille, the 60th edition of the Snim came to a close after several days of racing in a variety of conditions. Between light airs, steady breezes and site effects, crews had to adapt constantly. This anniversary edition confirms the SNIM's role in the cruising calendar.

In the harbor of Marseille, the SNIM remains an interesting observation ground for understanding crewed inshore racing, between reading the race course, equipment management and regularity over several legs.

A demanding Olympic harbor, between site effects and wind variations

On this edition, conditions swept across the weather spectrum, from steady winds to light airs, to a southerly breeze of around 10 to 13 knots on the final day.

And this variability highlights a fact well known to regular Marseille sailors: the harbour requires constant tactical choices. Coastal effects, soft spots and oscillations force crews to adjust their trajectories continuously.

On both constructed and coastal courses, the ability to anticipate tilts has often made the difference. The SNIM combines banana and inshore courses, sometimes longer than 10 miles. This mix forces the crews to change registers.

Regularity and reliability, the keys to IRC performance

In IRC 0 and 1, the TP52 Team Guenifey came out on top thanks to regular, incident-free sailing. In this type of series, the absence of damage is as important as pure speed.

A case in point: Albator 3, well placed, saw its chances jeopardized after a collision with a buoy, briefly immobilizing the boat. In a short championship, this type of incident is costly.

The same applies to IRC 2 and 3, where Terrible Joy and Long Nose XI have built their victories on consistency rather than isolated tactical moves.

A dense fleet, a laboratory before the major events

With 25 J70s entered and 12 rounds contested, the one-design series offered a glimpse of the level ahead of the world championship scheduled for the end of May 2026.

This volume of racing allows crews to fine-tune their settings and validate technical choices. The Euro Voiles crew dominates, demonstrating their consistent preparation in all conditions.

More broadly speaking, the SNIM plays the role of a benchmark regatta at the start of the season, a benchmark against which crews are measured.

The rise of double-handers and amateur crews

The presence of a Duo group and a Grand Surprise fleet demonstrates the evolution of sailing practices. The double requires a different organization on board, with different management of maneuvers and fatigue.

Phénomène's victory in the Grand Surprise also underlines the importance of crew cohesion, in this case within the family. In these short but intense formats, understanding on board remains a determining factor.

Transmission and renewal, a key focus for the organization

This 60th edition introduces trophies dedicated to young people and women's crews. These initiatives reflect a desire to broaden the scope of the sport and structure the industry.

The Nouvelle Vague trophy features very young crews, averaging around 19 years of age. The award for women's crews reflects the gradual evolution of gender diversity in regattas.

And behind these prices, there is a concrete challenge: renewing crews and maintaining the technical level of fleets.

A regatta firmly anchored in the Mediterranean calendar

Sixty years after its creation, the SNIM retains its place as one of the great early-season regattas in the Mediterranean. For the occasion, the club organized a grand crew party at the Palais du Pharo.

The Snim combines accessibility, a wide range of boats and high sporting standards. Above all, it remains a learning ground, where crews can test their automatisms before longer or more committed events.

But in the end, the SNIM reminds us of a simple fact: in regattas, the difference is rarely made by a dazzling performance, but by the ability to follow through without error.
