The Ferrari Hypersail project reaches a milestone with the completion of Giovanni Soldini's mission, as the 30-meter sailboat enters its validation phase.
A skipper transition in the midst of a critical phase
Giovanni Soldini's departure comes just after completion of the boat's construction. And this timing raises questions. The project is leaving the design and construction phase to enter a more sensitive period, that of sea trials, data integration and performance optimization. This is often the time when feedback from sailing weighs most heavily.
Soldini had been involved in defining the boat from the outset, with a vision of a sailor committed to offshore programs. His replacement by Enrico Voltolini, an engineer as well as a regatta racer, reflects a shift towards a more technical validation-oriented approach.
For experienced boaters, this is a classic situation in major projects. The transition between design and operation sometimes requires different skills, but it can also lead to a loss of continuity in technical choices.
A 30-metre flying monohull to be developed
The heart of the project remains this flying monohull, whose characteristics have yet to be publicly detailed. We're talking here about a sailboat capable of flying thanks to load-bearing appendages, in the tradition of the latest generation of foilers. At this scale, 30 meters, the structural constraints become major. The stresses on the foils, hull and rigging demand an engineering precision rarely achieved in yachting.
The current phase concerns the installation of on-board systems, their calibration and interaction. This includes power management, flight controls and real-time control systems.
Profiles from the America's Cup and SailGP
The choice of the new manager is not an insignificant one. Enrico Voltolini comes from the America's Cup and SailGP circuits, two environments where flying boats are the norm. This type of support requires a fine reading of data, immediate reactivity and the ability to work as part of an extended technical team.
Alongside figures like Glenn Ashby and Guillaume Verdier, already involved in the project, the team retains a strong expertise in racing foilers.
The official presentation of the boat's colors is scheduled for April 21, 2026.
