No Vendée Globe 2028 for Franck Cammas. The sailor confirms that he has been unable to raise the necessary budget to launch his IMOCA project.

According to information reported by Ici Provence, Franck Cammas will not be taking part in the Vendée Globe 2028. The French skipper confirms that he has abandoned his participation project due to insufficient funding. A decision that reveals the economic realities surrounding the construction and operation of an IMOCA designed to compete for victory.

An ambitious IMOCA project requiring a budget of 10 million euros

In early 2025, Franck Cammas announced his intention to line up at the start of the Vendée Globe in Les Sables d'Olonne in November 2028. The goal was worthy of the sailor's track record. To build a new IMOCA capable of leading the fleet in this non-stop single-handed round-the-world race.

According to information reported by Ici Provence, the navigator was counting on a budget of around 10 million euros for this project. This envelope was to cover the entire program, from the design of the monohull to its sporting and technical preparation. But in the absence of secure financing, it's becoming difficult to commit to such a project.

An economic reality that affects several skippers in the IMOCA class

Franck Cammas' decision comes at a particular time for the IMOCA class. Several skippers who took part in the last Vendée Globe are currently looking for new partners, or have had their programs suspended.

Still according to Ici Provence, several sailors are in this situation of uncertainty, including Thomas Ruyant, Maxime Sorel, Yannick Bestaven, Arnaud Boissières, Louis Burton and Romain Attanasio.

A navigator with a solid track record

Franck Cammas' absence from the start of the Vendée Globe 2028 may come as a surprise, given his track record in ocean racing. The 53-year-old skipper boasts one of the most comprehensive track records in French sailing.

Based in the Lorient region, he remains very committed to sailing large multihulls, notably aboard the Ultime SVR Lazartigue. He also won the last Transat Café l'Or as Tom Laperche's co-skipper.

Despite these successes, the Vendée Globe remains a missing link in his career.
