STOPSEL: how to properly rinse a marine engine before wintering

Rinsing a marine engine involves a lot more than just running it through fresh water. With the STOPSEL distributed by VDM-Reya, maintenance takes on a whole new dimension. Here's what you need to know to prepare your engine for wintering.

Rinsing a marine engine with fresh water is not enough to remove salt deposits. The STOPSEL product, used for over 25 years by marine professionals, ensures deep rinsing, while limiting limescale deposits. Here's an overview of the best practices and equipment for using it effectively, whether you're an individual or a professional.

STOPSEL, a targeted treatment against salt residues

Fresh water doesn't remove salt. STOPSEL dissolves it chemically. That's the difference. For marine engines, cooled by seawater, salt residues lead over time to deposits in the circuit and progressive corrosion of internal parts. STOPSEL neutralizes these effects, limiting wear and reducing the need for mechanical maintenance.

Different uses depending on the type of motor

Not all engines rinse the same way:

  • For outboards, the AUTOMIX accessory is installed directly between the "ears" and the freshwater inlet. Add a dose of STOPSEL, and let the water run for 15 seconds at low engine pressure, before switching off the water and the engine. The product should act for at least one hour, or even several, without risk. Restart the engine (still at idle) and wait until the Automix is empty (it becomes clear). And finally, stop the engine after a maximum of 5 minutes. If you leave it running with clear water, you run the risk of limescale build-up in the system.
Some motors have a built-in flush port: in this case, it's essential to consult the manufacturer's manual to find out whether the motor should be running during the operation.
  • On inboard motors, rinsing is carried out via the seawater filter. Close the water intake valve, then introduce the STOPSEL through this circuit.

AUTOMIX and rinse baths: two methods depending on user profile

The AUTOMIX system is the quick and easy system most often used by private individuals. It's ideal for occasional use, when the water comes out or at the end of the season. Professional mechanics prefer rinsing tanks, in which engines are immersed. This enables several engines to be treated in series, with STOPSEL concentrations adapted to large volumes.

Reduced water consumption and winterizing time

Rinsing with clean water for even an hour will never completely remove the salt. STOPSEL works in less than 2 minutes! For professionals, this means considerable time savings in the workshop. For private users, it's a quick maintenance operation that prolongs motor life.

Extended use beyond motors

STOPSEL is also used to clean equipment subject to salt spray: fittings, trailers, axles, zippers, etc. Using a mist spray gun connected to the AUTOMIX, the product is applied locally without being diluted too quickly. This prevents seizure or premature wear of components.

A useful complement: the NAVY 6 for on-board mechanics

In the workshop, NAVY 6 is the ideal complement to STOPSEL. This multifunctional product (6 functions: lubricant, degreaser, rust remover, cleaner, water repellent and electrical protector) is used on connections, moving parts and interfaces exposed to humidity. Less greasy than conventional products, it allows clean application without excess.

STOPSEL, AUTOMIX and NAVY 6 are distributed in France by VDM-Reya, HDS and SOGERIC.
