If Peter Burling had already announced his departure from TNZ but the Kiwis surely never imagined that their star helmsman would go to the enemy. At 33, the three-time Cup winner from New Zealand joins the Italian team as a member of the development group and the sailing team.
An unrivalled track record in the service of Italians

With three Olympic medals (gold in Rio, silver in London and Tokyo), six 49er world titles and three America's Cups (2017, 2021, 2024), Peter Burling has established himself as one of the most complete sailors of his generation. His high-performance experience, tactical insight and knowledge of onboard systems make him a major reinforcement for Luna Rossa, even if his exact role has not yet been specified.

Max Sirena, Managing Director of Luna Rossa, welcomed the arrival of the New Zealander: "1216"1300"1218"1537"1535"1601" We have always had a deep respect for his talent and sense of fair play. His arrival in the team will strengthen our sports management team and bring new energy to our development program.
A respectful transition, but a blow for the Kiwis
This change of team was made in good understanding with Emirates Team New Zealand, which nevertheless loses one of the pillars of its success for over a decade. The transfer takes on particular significance as the next Cup will be contested in Naples in 2027, far from New Zealand waters, adding to the disappointment of the Kiwi team's supporters.

The Italian team, runner-up in the 2000, 2007 and 2021 editions, is still aiming for a first victory in sailing's premier event. With the arrival of Burling, Luna Rossa is strengthening its human arsenal and affirming its determination to play a leading role in 2027.
