Passing your offshore license means taking an important step in your life as a sailor. No more coastal limits: with this extension to your boating license, you're authorized to sail without distance limits, day or night. But in concrete terms, what are the exam requirements? What equipment do you need? And how does the test work? Here's an overview of the 10 most frequently asked questions on the subject.

1. What are the prerequisites for taking the offshore license?
You need to be at least 16 years old, and above all hold a coastal option boating license (or a recognized equivalent if you come from a European country or Switzerland). This offshore license is in fact an "extension" of the coastal license.

2. Can I take my offshore licence while living abroad?
Yes, it's quite possible. It doesn't matter where you live. All you need is a coastal license or a recognized equivalent.

3. How much does it cost to register for the exam?
Administrative registration costs 38 ? in tax stamps (rate 2025). This cost does not include any training, which is optional but recommended to maximize your chances of success.

4. Is it possible to take the offshore license as an independent candidate?
Absolutely. You need to fill in a CERFA form, along with your coastal license, a photo if required, and a tax stamp. The form can be sent directly to the Délégation à la Mer et au Littoral, or via an approved training center.
