Plastimo's Pilot 180: a redesigned inflatable vest for yachtsmen and professionals alike

Available in over twenty versions, the Pilot 180 vest is evolving to meet the specific needs of both yachtsmen and marine professionals. Plastimo offers two ranges, including the Pilot PRO 180, adapted to PPE requirements. Here's a technical overview of this new-generation inflatable vest.

The Pilot 180 version 2025: optimized comfort and enhanced safety

Plastimo's new Pilot 180 inflatable lifejacket features modifications that have a direct impact on comfort of use and performance in the event of a fall into the sea. With buoyancy increased to 180 newtons and a higher chest position, the vest provides superior freeboard, which is beneficial for clearing the airways from the waves. This technical evolution, which complies with the EN ISO 12402-3 standard, is aimed in particular at sailors who enjoy outings in rough conditions or with thick clothing.

The shortened height of the âeuros vest âeuros reduced by 8 centimetres compared to the previous version âeuros also improves ergonomics, particularly when maneuvering in a seated or crouched position. This feature will appeal to both coastal cruisers and solo sailors.

Two distinct configurations: pleasure boating and professional use

The Pilot 180 range is now divided between standard and PRO models. On the one hand, versions designed for pleasure boating include features usually reserved for professional models: integrated SOLAS flashlight on harness versions, QBZ zip, compatibility with AIS or EPIRB beacons, and the option of adding an anti-mist mask.

On the other hand, the Pilot PRO 180 is designed for use in the maritime sector, from harbors to offshore wind farms, including fishing and work under regulatory constraints. PRO models feature high-visibility PVC or fire-retardant Cordura® covers, meet PPE requirements thanks to a double internal inspection window, and will soon be available in an ATEX version for explosive environments.

Modularity designed for the demands of the field

The Pilot 180 is available in some twenty models to cover a wide range of needs. Three release systems are available: manual, automatic UML Pro Sensor Elite, and hydrostatic Hammar. All are housed in a PVC-coated 300 D nylon cover, with QBZ closure to ensure smooth deployment.

The presence of single or double subcutaneous webbing, depending on the model, and the choice of buckle materials âeuros polyamide or âeuros 316L stainless steel are details that enable users to choose a customized configuration. Harness models are equipped to EN ISO 12401 standards, ensuring compatibility with standard lanyards and rigging systems.

Visibility and maintenance: functional priorities

All Pilot 180 vests feature an inflatable chamber made of fluorescent yellow polyurethane fabric with SOLAS-certified retroreflective strips (300 cm² surface area). The integrated SOLAS flashlight enables night-time tracking, an essential feature in the event of a MOB (Man Over Board).

The double viewing window, located inside the vest, enables users to check the condition of the percussion head and find out when it has been serviced, without having to open the cover. A key advantage for professionals who need to ensure constant compliance of their PPE equipment.

Pricing and finishes: a cost/equipment ratio adapted to uses

Prices for standard Pilot 180 models range from 105 to 170 euros, depending on the equipment chosen. PRO models start at 137 euros, rising to 165 euros for models with harness, Hammar hydrostatic system, double webbing and 316L stainless steel buckles. These price differences reflect specific technical choices, linked to frequency of use and operating environment.

The choice between a standard and a PRO vest therefore depends less on budget than on a detailed analysis of your sailing or work schedule.

Towards further integration of connected systems

The evolution of the Pilot 180 range confirms a fundamental trend: the increasing integration of electronic equipment in personal safety devices. Compatibility with MOB1 or M100 AIS beacons and Ocean Signal PLBs reflects this trend. It remains to be seen whether the standardization of these on-board devices will become the norm for all inflatable lifejackets designed for long-distance cruising or the sea.
