The Transquadra, a dream race. A single-handed (or double-handed) transatlantic race with a stopover in Madeira and a finish in Martinique. A race for those over 40, still working and able to spare a few weeks in summer for the first leg, and in winter for the second. An amateur race that has become more professional over the years.
A race within a race

In keeping with the original spirit of the race, this year's organizers are introducing a "Cruiser" classification, to be distinguished from the "Performance" yachts. This is where Alexandre Lajeunesse comes in. On his family boat, an Elan 350, he will take the start with the aim of " to do my best, to sail well and not regret my choices ".
A film as a trigger
His decision to enter this race came 2 years ago, after a screening of Yannick Bestaven's film "Rêver ne meurt jamais". So he imagines racing this transatlantic race, but why solo and not double-handed? " I like the idea of solo adventure. I don't want to have the mental burden of a teammate. It's also a form of inner adventure. As with my Ultra Trail runs, I like to be on my own. "
A family project

He's seen his project through from start to finish It's my company that sponsors me, but above all it's a family project. I co-own this boat with my brother. Our two families will be able to sail to Madeira this summer and the West Indies this winter. And even the return transatlantic race is planned with my brother. It's really a family project. And above all on a small budget. I'm counting on around ?30,000 to complete it, knowing that we already had the boat. "
Measured preparation
To prepare, Alexandre did a few solo races before the season. " I also prepared the boat to sail alone. It's not a boat designed for it. This race-cruise is quite physical. I modified the mainsheet circuit to have it in the center of the cockpit. I've also installed a symmetrical spinnaker, which should be more efficient than the original asymmetrical spinnaker for VMG downwind sailing in the trade winds. Finally, I've added a few display screens in the cockpit and provided for a second pilot. But for example, I haven't invested in navigation software like Adrena, as I don't do enough racing for that. I make do with Weather 4D. "
Atmosphere a few days before departure
Alexandre is delighted to be taking the start: " There's a great atmosphere on the pontoons. All the participants really help each other out. We talk to each other, pass on tips, it's all really friendly. We can't wait to cast off on Sunday. "
