Competitors in the Transquadra 2024 are on their way to the first leg of their transatlantic race. A total of 52 yachts have taken the start, 21 of them single-handed and 27 double-handed. That makes a total of 75 competitors battling it out in this race open to amateurs.
But if you look through the list of participants, only ONE woman appears!
How is it that 74 boys have managed to put their professional lives on hold to sail about 2 times 3 weeks in the summer of 2024 and winter of 2025? Why doesn't this type of ocean racing attract more women to the starting line?
Although the number of places in ocean racing is limited, and not everyone can attain the Holy Grail of racing a machine, women are well represented in the various categories, even if they are in the minority. IMOCA, Class40, Figaro, Mini... the spectator is no longer surprised to see women at the helm of these racing yachts.
Why then, on an amateur event, open to all and financially accessible, don't we find more women's projects? Are women not interested in ocean racing? Do sponsors turn a deaf ear to women? Are we in a promasculine, frankly macho environment? What do you think is going on?
