Bihan 5.80: A Bermudian version of Marine Composite's dayboat

A Bermuda-rigged Bihan 5.80

Launched at the end of 2021, the Bihan 5.80 is an elegant dayboat built by Morbihan shipyard Marine Composite. This fast dayboat, 9 of which were produced in 18 months, features a Houari rig with a carbon mast and peak. To meet demand from customers intimidated by this type of rig, the shipyard will unveil a new version at Grand Pavois 2023, featuring a more classic Bermuda rig.

Bertrand Aumont, the site's sales manager, explains: "We were confronted with requests from certain yachtsmen who like our boats, their shapes, their elegance, their easy, high-performance concept, but are reluctant to take the plunge into Houari rigging, even though it has many advantages! "

A different compromise between performance and use

Following initial trials, the performance differences expected by the shipyard have been confirmed. While the Houari and the Bermudian are equal in sustained winds of over 18 knots, the new Bihan 5.80 Bermudian is faster in light and medium winds, thanks to its high sail area. Bertrand Aumont adds: "It performs better, but is also more demanding, and will suit the yachtsman who is always on his trim. The Houari will be simpler and more forgiving for those who want fast cruising, above all."

For these performances, the owner of the Bermuda Bihan 5.80 will also have to accept a few transport constraints, with a longer mast fitted with spreaders and slightly more complex handling.

The new rig should slightly increase the price by 2 to 3,000 euros. The base price of the Bihan 5.80 houari is 36,000 euros (incl. VAT), ready to sail in 2023, and is generally around 40,000 euros with options such as engine and trailer.
