The Musée National de la Marine in Paris, located in the Palais de Chaillot, is getting a makeover and will reopen its doors in October 2023. The program includes new architecture, museography and a revamped tour route.

Thematic galleries

The new Musée de la Marine, still in the Palais de Chaillot, is organized around several thematic galleries showcasing more than 900 restored objects: scientific and technical, decorative, domestic, models, photographs, sculptures, paintings and furniture.

This semi-permanent tour will be renewed regularly and will cover various themes: art, history, science and technology, human adventure and popular tradition.

Upon entering the museum, a marine fragrance called "Sillage de mer" will greet the visitor. It was specially developed for the National Maritime Museum by the nose Nathalie Lorson, in collaboration with the Studio Magique. To start the visit, the visitor will enter a life-size stylized bow to discover an immersive marine film projected in 360°: under the sea, on the surface and on the sea.

A visit in four stopsâeuros¦

Through four stops, it will be possible to discover the different key objects and collections of the museum.

The models present model ships. These were used for many purposes, including the instruction of future officers or carpenters. Numerous models will be presented, from toy boats to larger models of almost 5 m.

The art of navigation presents the different navigation instruments and their evolution, from the first oceanic maps to the Galileo satellite.

The naval sculpture covers ship decoration, whether aesthetic, technical or political. In this space, one will discover prestigious figureheads but also a sculpted decoration of the Reale, a galley ambassador of the Sun King's aspirations, one of the museum's masterpieces.

The Views of the ports of France by Joseph Vernet are a series of 15 large format paintings representing the ports of France in the second half of the 18th century. They show everyday maritime and harbor scenes.

âeuros¦ and three crossings

The crossings highlight three themes related to the maritime issues of yesterday, today and tomorrow.

France, naval power and innovation this gallery allows visitors to understand the role and missions of the French Navy, as well as the development of the French navy from the 17th century to the present day. In this gallery, visitors will discover the stories of ships and sailors, the diversity of their profession and their know-how. The focus will be on tactical and technological innovations and inventions.

The maritime economy allows visitors to discover, surrounded by containers, the diversity of port activities and their different actors, but also the maritime routes of consumption. Through a scenography evoking the lounge of the transatlantic liner Normandie, visitors will also discover the transport of passengers.

Storms and shipwrecks approaches the sea from an unexpected angle. By entering a huge wave, we will discover the theme of solidarity linked to the danger of the sea through testimonies, imposing works and objects from famous shipwrecks.
