Wicklow: a welcoming Irish stopover between fishing and mountains

Fifty kilometers south of Dublin, Wicklow is a fishing and trading port located on the east coast of Ireland. Whether you want to anchor for a night or spend a few days visiting Ireland, Wicklow is an excellent choice for a stopover.

At anchor or at the quay

On the mooring side, a nice sandy area above the north pier of the harbor allows to drop anchor. The place is very easily accessible and well protected from the west and southwest. The bottom is good. The proximity of the harbor makes it possible to enter the city in a dinghy by taking the river. The dinghy can then be moored along the river quay.

On the harbor side, a few places are available on the east pier. About twenty buoys are also available for small local sailboats. The activity of the harbor is mainly focused on fishing.

A swimming area in the harbor

A supervised swimming area is located south of the north pier and along the beach. It is delimited by yellow conical buoys. It is not possible to moor the dinghy inside the harbor on the north pier because it is reserved for swimmers. The area is quite lively despite a water temperature averaging 14 degrees in early summer!

Easy access to downtown

The city center is in the immediate vicinity of the port and therefore easily accessible on foot. There are many small restaurants, pubs or take away, supermarkets, stores, etc. A nice path along the river allows beautiful walks. Many crows, swans and ducks can be seen there! There is also a promenade along the waterfront with a jogging track for the brave.

Many visits around

Within walking distance, you can visit the Black Castle, the abbey ruins and the church. But Wicklow is also an excellent starting point for a visit. The town is very well connected to Dublin by train. It is also close to the Wicklow Mountains National Park, with many hiking trails.

In addition, there are all kinds of water activities, a horse riding center, museums, gardens and waterfalls, distilleries and breweries nearby.
