Sailing or motorized pinnaces
Figures of the Arcachon Basin, the pinnaces are the iconic boats of the Gironde waterway. More numerous in the last few years, they also sail in their historical version, the tilloles. Through the texts of Anne Debeaumarché and the photos of Franck Perrogon, the book A voile et à moteur gives us the opportunity to learn more about the history of these boats linked to oyster farming and fishing, but which quickly became rivals in regattas.

The revival of the pinnaces, supported by the municipalities of the basin, gives place today to the world championship of the pinnaces which gathers tens of boats.

Sailboats of all types
This book is also an opportunity to discover other typical boats such as the sail ferry, a large sailboat designed to transport merchandise, while keeping a reduced draught to slip through the shallows of the basin.

The beautiful yachting is also honored with the mixed canoes, one-designs of Arcachon and other Loup, but also the 8 MJI and dragons which animated the water level during many years and in particular the famous regatta of endurance of the 18 hours of Arcachon.
Dynastic shipyards
Finally, one cannot talk about the Arcachon basin without mentioning its family shipyards, many of which date back to the 19th century. From the Bonnin shipyard created in 1863 to the Bossuet shipyard founded in 1874 and the no less famous Dubourdieu shipyard sold by the family in 2000, these workshops, which smell of wood, have played an important role in the preservation and revival of the Gironde marine carpentry.

If the book remains very synthetic and could leave the nautical history enthusiast hungry, it draws a pleasant portrait of the local nautical life. It is not a pure book of photos either and one would sometimes like to find more. You will have to go and do your own sailing on the Arcachon basin to complete your knowledge!
