Alan Roura buys the former IMOCA Hugo Boss to aim for the 2024 Vendée Globe

Alan Roura

Swiss skipper Alan Roura has announced the purchase of Alex Thomson's former boat to launch a new campaign for the Vendée Globe 2024. He tells us more about his sporting objectives and his project for his third participation in the non-stop round the world race.

Buyout of Alex Thomson's former Hugo Boss

A few days after the announcement of the Welsh skipper Alex Thomson of his desire not to participate in the Vendée Globe 2024 and after several weeks of speculation on the sale of his IMOCA Hugo Boss, the name of the new sailor at the helm of the boat has been revealed. It is the Swiss Alan Roura. The 28 year old takes over one of the most innovative boats of the 2020 generation of the IMOCA class, with its fully enclosed cockpit, even if Alex Thomson has not been able to demonstrate his potential in the race. "I am extremely happy to be the future skipper of this incredible boat! I had the opportunity to participate in a delivery trip with Alex Thomson recently and I am still amazed by her performance. In my opinion, this is the most accomplished boat of its generation, designed by a skipper with nearly 20 years of experience in IMOCA and who has never been afraid to go to the end of his choices. Even the most extreme ones. It's a safe bet that the next boats to be launched will be a lot like him..." explains Alan Roura.

Transmission of the boat and build up to the Vendée Globe

The skipper is currently putting together a 100% Swiss project for the 2024 edition of the round-the-world sailing race. For his third participation, Alan Roura is aiming for the top of the table and intends to give himself the means to do so by starting the transmission of the boat as soon as possible, directly with Alex Thomson. "This purchase is part of my performance project in 2024, with the desire to participate at the helm of a boat that is both efficient and reliable, which I will be able to exploit its full potential after three seasons of training beforehand," said the skipper. His first race at the helm of the boat will be the Route du Rhum 2022.
